Spring Breakup is the unusual musical marriage between Yukon songwriter Kim Barlow and Mathias Kom, nouveau Newfoundlander and leader of The Burning Hell. They like to live as far as possible from each other, and then get together and write pretty little ukulele and banjo songs about the inevitable end of love.Spring Breakup is a new band with very old hearts. Here is what some folks have said about Barlow and Kom:
“Barlow’s music pushes folk to the extreme. Highly innovative, she continually creates new sounds, meshing classical technique with roots and contemporary influences.” – CBC Radio3
“Don’t let Mathias Kom’s doomy Leonard Cohen baritone or the brooding, skeletal folk arrangements upon which he tends to hang his words fool you – the guy’s actually pretty funny, veritably overflowing with black wit and cracked genius.” - Toronto Star
“Barlow is at her best when giving free reign to her marvellous imagination and hybrid approach to construction and phrasing. A fine vocalist with unmistakable traces of Joni Mitchell in her delivery, Barlow really shines as a lyrcicist.” – Goldmine Magazine
“A perfect balance of mirth and the morbid. Every song announces Kom as one of the finest new songwriters in Canada.” - Guelph Mercury
Spring Breakup’s sophomore album It’s Not You, It’s Me will be released just in time for Valentine’s Day 2011.
